It is learnt that six vultures of the Himalayan Griffon species in the Rajabhatkhawa Vulture Conservation and Breeding Centre in Alipurduar will taste the sky very soon.

The six birds have now been translocated to the ‘release aviary’ that has been built in the Conservation and Breeding Centre that falls in the Buxa Tiger Reserve.

The six vultures will fly in the open skies with satellite transmission tag on their backs. To make the vultures habituated with the tag that weighs 22 grams, a ‘demo backpack’ of the same weight has already been set on the back of each vulture.

The six vultures are rescued birds and surrogate of the White-Backed, Slender-Billed and Long-Billed vulture, the most endangered species of the vultures, which are preserved and bred at Rajabhatkhawa.

Currently, there are 130 vultures at the centre, including the Oriental White-Backed vulture, Long-billed vulture and Slender-billed vulture species. Vultures were most abundant large birds of prey and nature’s scavengers across teh Indian sub-continent. Today, they are one of the most endangered bird species.
