Murti Murti is a picturesque place located in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, adjacent to Gorumara National Park. Murti river originating in the Neora Valley National park enhances the beauty of the place. The forest on the left bank is called Chapramari and the forest on the right bank known as Gorumara. Excellent scenic beauty is the main attraction of this place. Murti used to be the flooded with picnic parties during winter, however, after restrictions imposed, Murti has turned out to be a place where you will love to get lost into the wilderness. If you love adventure, want to be amidst pristine nature, it advisable you stay at Murti rather than at Lataguri. You may soak your feet at Murti river and take photographs at the iconic Murti Bridge. Elephant herds graze within the vicinity of Murti due to the presence of a large number of “Chalta” trees – the favourite food of elephant. If you are lucky, you may watch a herd of elephant crossing the Murti river.
Lava Lava is the base and the gateway for the famous Neora Valley National Park and surrounded by dense forest of coniferous trees. You should stay overnight at Lava for a visit to the national park which is full of exotic flora and fauna. Permit to visit Neora Valley National Park is issued from Lava.
Lava also attracts many trekkers. Trekking to Samthar Plateau starts from a place called Gompa Dara which is located close to Lava. The forested area around Lava is paradise for bird watchers. You may see many different kinds of birds like Blue Robins, Fulvetta, Finch, Wren Babblers and many more.
Close to the local market (bazaar) is Lava Monastery, also known as Ratnarishi Bihar Buddhist Gumpa. This monastery was established by Karma Lodro Chokyi Senge, the third Kongtrul Rimpoche. Situated beside the large Neora Reservoir Lake, this religious residence is erected using brick and concrete. Due to the increase in the number of devotees and monks over the years, the facilities in Lava monastery were expanded. Today, the Fourth Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche studies and trains here.
Rachela Pass: Rachela Pass is a trekking route 12 km from Lava through the Neora Valley Nature Reserve which is entered through Lava. The route is however difficult and steep. It also offers scenic beauty of magnolias, rhododendrons and bamboo trees. It takes about 3-4 hours to arrive at Rachela Pass through the steep road. The scenic beauty along the route is mesmerising.
Rachela Pass is virtually considered as a junction between Sikkim, Bhutan, and Bengal. Rachela Pass is the trade route between India (Sikkim) and Bhutan located at an elevation of 3152 meters. The pass is often visited by tourists and experiences footfall round the year.
One of the most significant trade routes in the history of India, one could witness mules carrying merchandise within countries. The tracks are still noticeable. You can also spot the 4 chief ridges dividing the valleys known as Neora, Rishi, Rangli, and Jaldhaka.
From Rachela Pass, other passes of Jelep La and Nathu La are visible. Also visible are the Singalila Range with its proud peak Kanchenjunga, worlds 3rd highest and also the entire Chola Range.
Sittong If you want to shun tourist hot spots like Darjeeling and Kalimpong and mingle with nature then – Sittong is the place to be. Sittong is more than simply orange orchards and has a gamut of things to offer – the rustic lifestyle of Himalayan people, open stretch of vistas and above all the culture of the place. How about waking up at dawn not with the alarm but with the chirping of birds. Enjoy the view of mighty Mt. Kanchenjunga from your bed. For me, Sittong is an epitome of buzzwords like eco-tourism, sustainable tourism, organic farming etc. In the mood of doing nothing – Sittong is the place to escape. Sittong is a cluster of villages in the Kurseong division of Darjeeling district. Consisting of Sittong-I, II and III. Sittong-I or Upper Sittong, in my opinion, is the best place to stay and explore the surroundings. Best home-stays are located at Ghalaytar Bazar area of Sittong and the mobile network is fairly stable.
